Expeditions for
Live Pterosaurs
Pterosaurs Still Living
Some cryptozoologists and other explorers have searched for living pterosaurs
in Papua New Guinea and in North America. This is a PSL index of some
of those expeditions and others relevant to ropens, etc.
Jonathan Whitcomb’s expedition
on Umboi Island late in 2004
Scott Norman’s pterosaur
sighting in California, 2007
American explorer David
Woetzel saw a ropen light
Gideon Koro was interviewed
on camera in 1994
The “Destination Truth”
expedition, 2007: a flying
light was videotaped
Two ropen expeditions:
Whitcomb-Paina and
Woetzel-Guessman

The expedition of Paul Nation
in 2006 (seen here in 2002)
The 1990’s expeditions of Carl Baugh, Paul Nation, and Jim
Blume led to the early 21st century expeditions of Whitcomb,
Woetzel, Guessman, and (again) Paul Nation. These, in turn,
encouraged the 2007 Destination Truth ropen expedition,
also in Papua New Guinea. Woetzel, Guessman, and others
continued, in mid-2007 with an investigation of a new location
in the Western United States; this secret location on the West
Coast continued to be used for searching for live pterosaurs,
and Scott Norman’s sighting there has encouraged further
support for this branch of cryptozoology.
Late in 2017, a native living on the mainland of Papua New
Guinea, Rex Yapi Epa, obtained funds for leading a more
significant ropen expedition than had ever before been under-
taken on Umboi Island. This is planned not just for days or two
or three weeks but months.
The funding project itself took many months with many of the
donors being Americans who had been interested in living-
pterosaur investigations for some time. In contrast to previous
expeditions on Umboi Island, this one, will have no Americans.
